The Journey

An expedition of ice and sea, entirely carbon neutral, traversing the most vulnerable and remote environments on our planet.

August 2023

Confronting the
Southern Ocean

For months the Project Zero team have been preparing to embark on this odyssey - the Nanook X has been entirely retro-fitted to be a sustainable exploratory vessel. Plunging into the might of the Southern Ocean the team begin the awesome and treacherous voyage to South America. Aboard Nanook X, the crew must edge further south to harness the powerful gales of the ‘Roaring Forties’ and make it to Patagonia before storm surges become overwhelming.

September 2023

Passengers of Patagonia

Moored at the foot of Neo Glacier, Geoff and Kit disembark and begin a precarious ascent of the moving ice-fields. With the onset of Global Warming, these Glaciers are receding at an alarming rate - making for dangerous crevassing and avalanches. Once above the glacier, the team will utilize ‘wind power’ to cross the entire Patagonian Ice-cap and return to their the vessel. Meanwhile onboard the Nanook X, Al and Jordan work tirelessly to keep the vessel in position and prepare to venture into arguably the most dangerous stretch of water on earth - the Drakes Passage.

October 2023

Crossing the
Antarctic Peninsula

Suddenly the horizon bares a fearsome obstacle - Ice. Accessing leads and openings in the flow, the crew must diligently weave further South through the mighty Drakes Passage between Cape Horn and Antarctica. The Antarctic Peninsula is teeming with life. Having gained 70 degrees south, the Nanook X anchors at the foot of the ice sheet. With sleds loaded, Geoff and Kit depart their floating sanctuary, navigating crevasse fields and avalanche corridors in an attempt to make a crossing of the Antarctic Ice-Cap. Meanwhile, Back on the Nanook X Allister and Jordan brave Antarctic storms and shifting ice as they await their team members return.

2024

The Nanook X
ventures north

After months of exploration, the Nanook X finds safe anchorage in Brazil. The crew will begin repairs on Nanook in preparation for the voyage into the northern hemisphere. It's in this phase of the expedition that Nanook is converted for research purposes, with a crew of environmental scientists and activists stepping onboard for the journey north.

2024

Iceland's frontier of
fire and frost

Fjords fall into a churning sea. After months of repairs and an enormous voyage to the Northern Hemisphere, Nanook has made it to Iceland. 10 Years Ago the country experienced a sharp spike in tourism, now this fragile island nation is feeling the effects of both increased popularity and climate change. The crew utilise the Nanook X to explore the outer reaches of the area, whilst Geoff and Kit embark on a journey into the islands interior.

2024

The Ghosts of Svalbard

The northern lights illuminate an arctic scene as Nanook X weaves precariously between ice flows. The team has reached Svalbard, home to the highest density of Polar Bears on earth. Gearing up and jumping ashore, father and son traverse the island. Showing great respect for the bear’s power and presence as they travel, their traverse will allow them to immerse in the plight of this mighty animal.

2024

Arriving at the
Arctic Ocean

Never have we been capable of sailing far into the arctic circle, yet now we can! In the penultimate representation of shifting temperatures, the team sails as far north as 85-degrees before lodging Nanook X in the summer ice flow. Geoff and Kit launch out across the treacherously thin ice to be the first unsupported team to reach the Northern Pole of Inaccessibility (NPOI).
